After 13+ years of making music, 6 of which I've been doing it professionally and as my main/only source of income, I can tell you that the absolutely most important thing when it comes to mixing and producing is to TRUST YOUR EARS. I usually advice people not do so certain things if I think they're unnecessary or if I know better ways to achieve the same or better results, but at the end of the day what matters the most is that it sounds good to you and that it sounds just as good everywhere you listen to it. And that usually can't be a achieved without proper monitoring and lots of cross referencing.
You need at least one really good trusted pair of headphones (HD 650 always comes to mind), some decent speakers with a sub and loads of other common listening devices (car stereo, iPhone earbuds, laptop speakers, computer speakers, bluetooth speaker, etc.) for cross referencing.
Of course the perfect world scenario is mid to high end studio monitors, but the thing most mixing and mastering engineers will tell you about mixing with studio monitors is that speaker placement and room treatment are just as important as the monitors themselves, if not more so. This means that unless you've got a proper space to place the monitors in the right position as well as enough budget for good monitors, some basic bass trapping and first reflection dampening, AND good headphones, then you're better off investing on good headphones that you know you'll be able to trust rather than on monitors that you wont.
A lot of people will tell you that you need studio monitors for mixing, yet I've managed to make a good living mixing and mastering almost entirely on headphones so you can't say it's not possible.
