The technique of having two copies of the same thing, panning one left and one right, and slightly delaying one of them really doesn't work. The technique of having two copies of the same thing and having one slightly detuned also doesn't work. Both of these methods sound terrible in mono.
When I listen to professional tracks, the stereo sounds are perfect. No phasing whatsoever, even in mono, yet when I try to mimic that, it sounds bad. What am I doing wrong?
I use FL Studio and I have tried their stereo enhancer and stereo shaper and both have the same result. I have also tried Xfer's Dimension Expander, which actually does a decent job of keeping phase under control, but also messes with the mix.
