I'm not much into making chiptune, but I really dig the sound of well done "chiptune-ish" arpeggios, an example being this:

Is there any theory to follow when making a good arp? Whenever I try it always sounds cheesy, why does the one I linked just seem to "work"? Basically, I'm wondering about the rules of thumb here: How far up and down octaves does a "classic" arp usually span? What type of waves work best? How is this "glimmery" effect achieved? etc.
