My studio is in my bedroom which is approx. 8'x9'. I use Yamaha HS8's in a corner with the room control knob lowering the bass a notch and I typically find myself pretty satisfied with how my mixes translate. Note that the room has 6" of rockwool behind the desk, a bed, a rug and 3" of rockwool covering nearly all of the walls. Thus, the room is not perfect but (imo) definitely usable.
One area I find sometimes catches me off guard, however, is how much sub is in my mixes - sometimes a little too much, sometimes not enough, but I can't really tell until I'm listening on a home stereo system, in a car or something like that.
I'm considering buying the matching sub for my monitors (the Yamaha HS8s), a decoupling stand and a monitor controller so I can flip back between having the sub at low levels and not having it to check where my ultra low end is at. A lot of people claim this can be problematic but I mainly want to flip to it on/off to check; not have it on all the time.
Can you see flaws in this thought process? A sub-pac might be nice but I'm not sure it will be as good as a real sub (plus I figure I will want one eventually especially if I move into a bigger space). Headphones can help but are a difference experience altogether for mixing. Thoughts?
