As an adult, learning guitar and piano as a hobby, I enjoy it, but I feel disheartened by the way people don’t really want to hear me play. If I got to a certain point, would there be places to perform? Even if I don’t have friends for a band, or am not good enough to be, like a true concert pianist?
I keep thinking about how in older days, a family member learning music was entertainment for the whole family. But now nobody wants you to play. They’d rather just listen to the music from a recording, or watch somebody better than me on YouTube.
I fantasize about the family all huddled around the piano while I play a song and everyone else sings and is having a good time. But it just doesn’t seem like people want that nowadays, at least not in my family or friend group. It seems like if I ever play in front of people, they just accuse me of being like a show off or something, like that guy who everyone makes fun of, playing acoustic guitar on a college campus.
I’m learning music for myself, not other people. But I do wish other people appreciated it and wanted to hear me play, but it feels like in this global world, there’s just always somebody better and it feels kinda less worth it. Do you know what I mean?
Do other people feel disheartened by this? If so, what have you done to cope? Or find people who do appreciate the playing? I’m not trying to be an all star, but it would be nice if people enjoyed my playing every now and then
