I’m a thirty year old guy who enjoys music as a hobby. I can play a handful of relatively simple songs on guitar and piano. I’d like to take music a bit more seriously.
One problem I always have is that I have no idea where to perform. It’d be nice if I was kind of working towards something or somewhere I could show off what I learned a little bit. Are there any good opportunities for adults to show off a bit? I definitely don’t want to sing and being in a band is always something that I’ve been a little interested in, but kind of scared of. Like I won’t be good enough, or whatever. I also have no idea how to find band mates. I’m not really a center of attention kind of person, but it feels weird to just keep practicing so I can play in my own house
I also don’t really know what I’d want to learn more of. Like, should I focus on either piano or guitar to really improve? I like how structured piano can be. When I’ve taken guitar lessons, it always felt super unstructured. But maybe it’d be different if I studied classical guitar? Which I’m pretty interested in. I love the classical guitar arrangement and covers of rock songs. And classical guitar in general sounds beautiful. I don’t really know the songs, but put on Spotify playlists of classical guitar every now and then.
I also love the piano and how full it is. It feels less like it requires you to sing. And it feels a bit more capable of carrying a song all by itself, where guitar feels like you need a second or third person.
If I don’t choose to focus on one, how should I do I split my time? What could some goals be for someone like me? Lastly, right now I have guitars and no piano, but I’ll probably get a digital piano no matter what in the next month or two. Maybe I shouldn’t, though because it’s just a distraction? But my guitar is a steel string and bad for classical. So maybe I’d need to buy one of those to get into that?
Generally, I think music is fun and enjoy both the piano and the guitar. I’m somebody who does really well with structured learning and I’d like to progress. I feel like I’ve never really gotten out of the beginner stage of either. And I know very little music theory. I’d love to know more, though.
I know the notes on the staff and how to read a key and time signature to some extent, but there is very little that I could sight read on either instrument. On guitar, I’ve gone through a bit of the Hal Leonard stuff on my own to try and build a better foundation, maybe I’ll do that more? I kinda miss piano though and I really just want to be good at both. But then, it always comes back to, what would I even do if I were good with either of them?
