I've taken a variety of music lessons through the years, focusing on guitar and harmonica, but something I have either never been presented with, or have been too dense to pick up on, is a sort of "roadmap" for what I've learned and what it does for me.
For example, with guitar I've been shown various chords and techniques, but never really got into theory - it was more, "now we're going to learn to play this new song".
I had a good harmonica teacher for a while who sort of balanced theory with practical skills, but I never really understood why I was learning things - for example, it took me forever to pick up on the fact that learning scales meant I could play notes that sounded "right" when I knew the key of a song. I learned modes, but never really understood why.
Is there a generally accepted sequence of what to learn to build up one's skills as a musician, especially from the theory perspective? "Learn this, and you will use that when you learn this other, more advanced thing"?
What would be considered basic, foundational understandings, then beginner, then intermediate...that kind of thing?
