This is a guitar lesson on how to play The Girl From Ipanema (Garota de Ipanema) by Antonio Carlos Jobim.
It’s a classic of bossa nova music.
To keep things as simple as possible, I’ll first explain a basic “mirroring” pattern, a cliché of bossa rhythms, to apply to all of the chords. Then I’ll go through the structure (A A B A) and the chords. There are obviously several ways to play the chords in this tune, I’ll only show a few options involving chord extensions and different sets of strings.
I will also demonstrate how to alternate the bass between the root and the 5th of the chords and how to apply the rhythm anticipation - typical of bossa and samba.
It’s impossible to go over the whole process of learning such a beautiful and complex piece of music in one video only, therefore I’m not covering how to play the melody (or a chord melody arrangement), the harmonic analysis and how to improvise over this tune.
If you’re interested in learning that as well, drop me a comment and I’ll consider making another video if there are enough people interested.
Here is the full video lesson with rhythm pattern and chord shapes: https://youtu.be/yE7jCZjJgZ8
It doesn’t want to be a comprehensive lesson on this tune, it’s more of a summary of the basics of rhythm and harmony involved you can use to learn this beautiful piece in a short amount of time. Keep learning bossa nova and apply other patterns and chord choices to it once you learn them to add even more variations.
Hope you like it! Thanks for checking this out.
