I've been studying mathematics on and off for about thirty years - for perspective, I'm 58. I recently realized that a big part of my problems with the subject in high school and college was not understanding what mathematics is.
Music is another of the subjects that I tried to learn in college. I've begun to suspect that part of my ongoing challenge is a basic lack of understanding. Knowledge, that I have, but knowledge, it's become clear, is not understanding. For example, one of my particular ambitions is understanding what syncopation is. This requires understanding what beat is. I can't hear it if I don't understand what it is.
My husband assures me that most people who 'get' music do so on an intuitive basis. This is not one of my abilities. I managed to learn what key meant in my mid-thirties, after about six months of intense independent study. Rhythm (beat) has been a harder nut to crack, though.
Does anyone have suggestions of sources (books or online) that would be helpful in this pursuit?
