- I was never supported in my passion for music. My father never wanted me to play and still doesn't want, therefore I never had the opportunity to get class. I bought my first electric bass at 22, with my very first salary.
- Now, I basically have a life to start from scratch. After 3+ years of severe depression, I am completing my medical treatmens, preparing to leave a difficult and abusing home thanks to some savings, and just want to start living - since so far I didn't really.
- My passion for music is just enormous - I wanna make it a career, even if that means the risk of starving or not succeding. It's just what literally helps keeping me alive while treating severe depression, abuse and anxiety in therapy.
- As I said, I also experienced severe depression in my life, which took me in bed for years and also in hospital, that's why I didn't manage to start to work (and so afford an education) at 18.
- I then followed 1 year of private bass lessons with good results, final performance and an even greater passion.
- I also enrolled in a Music Technology course at university - which gives you some very little basis of music theory, but really very little.
- Right now, I want to do whatever I can to get back on track and expand even further. My dream is to be a music maker - a songwriter and EDM producer in particular - and to play the bass. Well, I also like many other fields like soundtracks composing, teaching, and such.
But, as my fellow countryman Giorgio Moroder stated in the Daft Punk song,
I definitely wanted to become a musician
It was almost impossible because, it was..
The dream was so big
That I didn't see any chance
I feel like I am soooo late in starting and feel like I have sooo much to learn that I may be too old for the industry when I may have a 'sound' education.
And, yes, it will still be worth the try, but since I feel I have to hurry up (while managing mental health and avoiding burn out, though), I'd reeally like to get some insights on how to better improve my chances :) Thanks very much.
So far, the options I currently see are:
- Try to get into a Conservatorie for "Electronic Music". They are state music academies that offer a full time great education for free, and also enable you to be a school teacher. Admissions are extremely competitive and the programme is very broad. It would mean hitting the books this summer as much as I can, with the risk of not making it.
- The other route is to do the same, but for bass guitar. To be totally honest, it was my original dream and the path I like most, but it's not doable for now. I will probably be 25 or 26 when I'll have some bit of a chance at it, which means graduating a master's at around 30. Now, Idk what's your opinion about it °° but I always felt like that would be really really old to be a professional player. Maybe that could realistically leave you with teaching and some tutoring.
Also, provided I choose this route, I still have to find something productive and meaningful to do during the years of preparation.
- Keep the music tech degree and doing more extra / private / self-studying things. Like increasing the hours of lessons and practice and do some serious self studying on the side. I was thinking about mastering a daw and midi keyboard and also improve on musical theory knowledge. That would be the 'path of least resistance', basically - although it would leave me with less formal credentials, and the tech things would remove time from learning music...
And then focusing on getting into a more music-focused master's degree.
Well... those are the ones I see, at least.
Nobody can know the 'right' answer, probably. But, nonetheless, if you can help with any information, insight, opinion - that would be really kind and appreacited :))) Thanks.
