I'm looking for a new instrument to learn but I'm not sure which route to go.
Here are some fast facts:
- I played classical percussion from the ages of 6-17. I absolutely loved it, but I know it can be very intense, time-consuming, loud, and expensive. Plus, it's not as fun playing by yourself. At this point, I'd rather keep the good memories and leave the drums and bells in the past.
- I played piano many years growing up. It was okay but I wasn't particularly fond of it. I never practiced.
- Played recorder (as many children do, in school, the cheap little plastic ones) for a few years. I actually really liked it - I would learn songs on my own outside of school.
- I begged my parents for guitar lessons as a teen but I ended up hating it. I learned that I hate picks. I also have small hands so I felt it was a lot more difficult for me. I attended lessons and practiced at home for about a year but my hands never got used to it and it was painful for me.
- I'm now in my late 20s and I haven't dabbled in music since I quit percussion at 17. I'm definitely rusty - I remember how to read percussion notation but not traditional sheet music.
- I would prefer to stay in the $100-$300 range but I know that might be too unrealistic so my max would have to be $600. Absolutely not above that.
- I'm not interested at all in ukelele, violin, or harmonica.
- I have been wondering about certain instruments (celtic harp, flute, bass guitar) but I am open minded to all suggestions!
- My basic goal is to have fun learning a new instrument, re-learning sheet music again, and learning how to play some of my favorite songs on the new instrument. It would be nice if years into the future, I'd be able to play with some type of band or group (at an amateur level just for fun) but that is an afterthought and not important right now.
- It can't be too loud or too big because I live in a tiny apartment and want to be kind to my neighbors.
Any suggestions, advice, etc is greatly appreciated! Thank you all!
