Hey guys, after reading the recent article on gain staging posted around here (thank you so much for the translation, /u/todaysthrowawayfam) I'd like to ask for advice. I've learned that it helps a lot to use the knobs next to the channels in FL Studio to tune the volume of each one down so it peaks at about -18db just after adding the channel. It helps with leaving headroom and leveling out everything so the tune doesn't sound muddy.
See I've been working on this tune for about a week or so already and last time I've been catching it sounding quite off, mostly due to the peaking way up in the headroom. I've then gone off to bed and read about the gain staging and the -18db peak tunedown.
I think I'm pretty much late at this point since I've got all my effects up in the mixer already but I nonetheless tried to turn the volume knobs in the channel rack down so each effect peaks at around -18. Here's what it sounds like afterwards: song after tuning down
Also here's what it sounded like up to this point: song before tuning down
I think that before i tuned down the song it sounded clearer, afterwards not so much anymore but that's probably because the channels weren't properly leveled to work on them in the first place.
Any ideas how to proceed from here? Do I disconnect my channel rack from the mixer completely, remove all effects, then go down to leveling them from the channel rack and plug them up into the mixer again? I really like where I'm going with this song and that it doesn't stride from my initial vision for it, like, at all. I wouldn't wanna restart the entire project.
Thanks in advance!
