hey everyone,
i sometime wonder when the loudness war , which i though was supposed to come to an end with the new streaming policies on the maximum rms and loudness normalisation, is going to stop. we all see that the big names in the edm industry keeps making super loud tracks , and sometimes so loud that all the elements get squashed to a point we don't realy hear any dynamics, and for sure the tracks could be better if the rms was around -9 rather than -4. I don't really mind really , but i feel like it's still an obligation to have loud tracks in order to get noticed / pubished on a label. i almost never hear tracks on +20k labels which aren't over compressed. when i hear underground techno/house tracks , from musicians who take their inspiration from the 90's , the dynamics are there and in clubs the sound is just nicer , the kick and snare are directly in your face and i think it makes the dance easier. this is why i mainly listen to underground electronics , because musicians seem to have less restrictions, in term of mastering, mixing , and sound design.
i sometime i feel like the loudness war is also stopping small artist to get some attention. i see some banging tracks which aren't as loud , and which have that nice amateur/straight forward sound , without 2 hundreds synths , billions of fx and samples. but they seem to be put aside because they're not as loud as the "professional sound" which a lot of people are seeking.
i'd love to hear your opinion on the subject. would you be ready to squash your sound and loose quality, because eveyone do it , in order to get acceptance from the listeners / labels ? or do you truly believe that the next generation will be free of the loudness war, and that we are the musicians who should start this change ?
