Hey guys,
First post to r/edmproduction! I have a lot of drafts where I neglected to properly gain stage each track from the beginning. With many of the drafts quite far a long and with heavy use of automation clips, I'm finding it difficult to go back and adjust each track to make sure the song is peaking at -6 dB. I've read in previous posts that a shortcut might be to simply lower the master volume.
There was no discussion regarding how this may affect the dynamics or add distortion. I'm concerned this shortcut might essentially be adding a limiter and squashing the sound. What are the possible disadvantages to this possible shortcut? Any other tips regarding gain staging are much appreciated.
