My current understanding is that whenever you turn a sound way up and it reaches the limit threshold, the sound's shape is modified by the limiter, and this introduces new harmonics to the sound. I also understand that saturating vsts try to emulate analog saturation, so distortion happens gradually.
Is this correct? Am I flat out wrong in something? Could I emulate saturation by using compression with an insane ratio with short attack and long release?
