A bit of background on myself: I'm a software programmer with several years of experience. I've been doing this kind of work since my senior year in college, and it's been my career since. But I recently got laid off from work and hit a dry spell in my job hunt, hoping that things will pick up after the holidays. My personal savings are running dry. My brother knows this and was letting me know if I'd want to get involved in his work.
He is a music producer and also offers mixing services to other producers. One of his long term goals is to be a famous electronic music artist. His interest is mainly in the fact that years ago I made remixes and original songs (but mostly remixes), and he really likes some of the work that I do. Not to toot my own horn but a lot of his music does sound similar to my beginner times of producing electronic music. But that's understandable since he started only about three years ago. I got into production with DAWs over 10 years ago.
So it's putting me in a confusing spot. On one hand he wants to be a famous producer and I don't really put much stock into it but if it works out for him, I'll be happy for his success. On the other hand I am not really interested in turning music production into a job. And it's not like he's making a killer profit with his mixing business either. He's mostly in the "networking and producing" phase. I only got into making remixes as a hobby and shared those with a niche online community, and I rarely do that stuff anymore. So what am I to do where when my preferred choice is to keep job searching for programming jobs, and he is using my unemployed status as leverage to get into the business with him? How do I make this not so awkward?
