I got into electronic music not necessarily through EDM, but from my favorite retro video game tracks, and the Synthwave genre.
I tend to get in my head a lot and think about how the stuff I like and the ideas I come up with wouldn't necessarily appeal to many people. This makes me lose motivation in producing.
Anyone have a similar issue? I like way too many different things. Synth wave, old school deadmau5 (his halcyon441 days), classic 16 bit video game soundtracks, "cyberpunk" style ambient (deus ex soundtrack comes to mind)
The ideas that come out are influenced by all of that, and what comes out might not really have a wide appeal.
Then again there are a lot of artists that pt out their own unique stuff and still have a following. Boards of Canada probably don't have mass mainstream popularity, but they still put out their own unique sound and have a fanbase.
Do you think there has to be a balance between your unique creativity and what is the current popular trends?
