I've been struggling with this problem where I'll make my drums then sketch out a bass line that sounds well with it, but when it comes to introducing melody and synths into the mix it becomes really incoherent. My melody will FEEL like it fits into the track as a whole while I'm designing it but it just never seems to work. It usually sounds good alongside the drums or the bass independently but never all together. I'm finding myself frequently rewriting basslines or scrapping melodies after a decent amount of time and then running into the same problem again. I'm not really getting anywhere with my tracks because of this and it can get really frustrating when I'm feeling some inspiration and thinking I'm on a roll just to have it all fall apart when I try to put it together. Is this just a genuine lack of skill? Will this go away over time with practice? Or is there some element of music theory I'm failing to grasp? Could it simply be too early for me to be trying to make full songs? I think I make good sounds and I feel that once I overcome this I'll be able to progress much more quickly. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can anyone suggest some resource that can help me recognize where I'm going wrong, or at least give some suggestions on increasing the cooperation between individual elements in my tracks?
(Sorry if this is a bit rambley. It's late but I want to get my thoughts out before bed, I will revise this in the morning and try to better axplain my conundrum)
