Hey there, been trying to optimize my bass drums lately. I heard and read everywhere that one should have the bass drum hit at -10 db. I tried to have it always at 10 or 9 and that´s -sometimes- fine but often its just way to loud for my liking. The song I did today came out better with the bass drum at -14 db and lots of frequencies taken away with an eq even. When I have a bass drum at -10 there´s just not enough headroom for me to balance everything nicely and still be at -6db for good mastering.
My question ist, what are your tricks for mixing bass drums? Which level do you mix it to and is this -10db guideline any good?
