Does anyone have any tips or resources where I can learn about Chord Syncopation. I'm doing ok with chord progressions (except I can't seem to avoid falling back to VI-IV-I-V - no matter how much I tell myself I'm not Hans Zimmer...) but am struggling to find good chord patterns outside of 4bars x 4 or 2x4 and 1x8 etc.

You only need to watch the first minute to see what I'm talking about. I really like how the chords progress without simple 4x4 patterns, how the chords move from one bar into the middle of the other.
Whenever I try and do something similar it always sounds wrong.
Are there known patterns that work, is there a way to work out patterns that will work? Any resources or guides on how to figure this stuff out?
