I got my start in bands and then performing live techno using all hardware, I've never been very good with computers and all attempts to incorporate a computer into what I do have been a mess. I don't have the money or space for lots of hardware anymore, and I feel like strictly hardware is very limiting, but trying to make music with a computer is so difficult and overwhelming for me I just can't make anything happen. Does anyone have any tips or know of any exercises or anything that can help me better understand how to do this? A big problem is only having a 23" monitor doesn't allow me to see every window and control panel, but I know some of you somehow do this stuff with just a laptop and I would love to figure out how you keep all that stuff organized in your head. All the Youtube tutorials I see are all about how to accomplish specific tasks with specific software, but my problem is a bit more "big picture" and I have found no videos addressing similar.
Any advice at all would be great, I feel so incredibly lost. I'm using Ableton, don't have any other softsynths or anything, all the stuff that came with Ableton is confusing enough (I understand how the stuff works, having difficulty controlling it). Trying to avoid GAS and just work with what I have, but at this point not sure if it is possible. I don't know anyone local who makes electronic music so I don't really have anyone around to help or learn from. I have so many questions I'd annoy the hell out of all of you if I asked them.
Thanks.
