My dad is 75 years old and diabetic, and has been recently unable to so much as hold a fork or a spoon. He just had surgery on his hands that will hopefully restore some function, but he tells me that he will never be able to play the guitar or piano again, and will even need to learn to write left-handed.
My dad is a gifted musician, and has historically been able to teach himself to play just about any instrument, particularly anything with strings. He's also a beautiful singer, though I think he accesses different feelings playing music than singing. Also, one of the reasons he loves to play guitar is because he can accompany himself singing.
My heart hurts for him. Music is a part of him that's deeply intrinsic, and I fear not being able to play music will be awful for his mental and spiritual health. Does anyone here have any suggestions for an instrument he can learn that doesn't require dexterity in his hands?
Thank you in advance!
