Hi, I’m a singer first and guitarist second with zero knowledge about music theory. All my songs are chord shapes moving around the fretboard. When I feel super-creative I play the open E and/or add the pinky. As fun as that sounds, it doesn’t sound that fun.
So in my quest to find shapes that go with my chords I stumbled across weird roman numeric (I,IV,VI,V), occult pentagrams , circles of fifths and what have you.
I thought maybe the problem was I didn’t know what I was playing. So I searched online for chord names and it turns out that the 9-9-11-10-x-x that I had been playing was actually the C#sus4addb11 (C# Suspended 4th Add Flat 11th). Had I know this, I wouldn’t have dared play it.
So you see my problem is I can’t suspend the flat and add a fifth on the what have you. All I want to know where I can take the 9-9-11-10-x-x because I like(d) how it sounds. That’s it. I don’t want to be a master shredder (TMNT reference), I just want to write songs I can sing on.
Any recommendations on where to start would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
