I've found myself really drawn into music theory as I've gotten older, in particular chord structure and how different chords relate to one another (chord wheel, etc). I don't have any experience with any musical instrument beyond a plastic recorder in elementary school, and I feel like that may be holding me back.
I've tried to follow along on some different online lessons, and it's very abstract and difficult to follow without being able to tie into a specific instrument. So I'm interested in learning an instrument as a way to better understand music theory. I don't aspire to become deeply proficient on my instrument, but I do want to go fairly deep on theory.
So I'm looking for a recommendation on the best instrument to help me get a better understand of music overall. My constraints:
- budget is flexible but would be great to start in the $100-300 range
- something small enough to have easily available in medium sized house
- can practice quietly or with headphones
- doesn't need to be easily portable
Other musical interests:
- I enjoy jazz and electronica.
- I'm strangely drawn to interesting bass lines.
Any suggestions and recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
