At the moment, I am a 22 year old, first year grad student (doing my masters in computing) and have been wanting to learn an instrument for the past 4 years. I figured I needed a hobby other than uni work so I am here for some advice about instruments and where to start as an adult beginner with virtually 0 musical background aside from self-teaching myself guitar.
I have been tossing up between learning flute or violin, would prefer classical training. I would mainly be looking to play either classical pieces, or film scores. Is sheet music widely available for both instruments?
I absolutely adore the violin and I know the learning curve will be much bigger..but at the same time I feel that it could be very rewarding? On the other hand, I love the sound of the flute and feel it would be a bit easier to pick up (again, as I did about a year of flute lessons when I was 10 lol)? One thing though, I can be impatient which may sometimes affect my motivation when learning, but I am working on that.
Something I noticed was, student violins seem to be much cheaper than student flutes. The Stentor Student II violin is about $350-400 (AUD), whereas the Yamaha 222 flute is about $700+(AUD). I found other flute brands such as "Fontaine" and "Steinhoff" on (real) music store websites, but I am not sure how reputable the brands are. Those brands are generally about $300-400(AUD).
Would anyone be able to give me some advice or anything else I should consider when picking an instrument? As a computing major, there will be times where I get very busy and don't know if I will be able to regularly practice during those periods, but this is definitely something I have wanted to do for a while so I would hope I don't give up easily.
Thanks much.
I'll just add that my goals would be to learn an instrument to play for myself, as opposed to joining any groups right now.
