I'm teaching myself Piano - but I'm an experienced flute player with no actual music theory outside of what is needed to play in a group. I'm following the accelerated piano adventures published by Faber, but I'm ignoring most of the theory, such as the pentatonic scales, thirds/fourths/fifth/regression of themes, etc. Some of I already understand, but parts of it are foreign to me. I understand that this allows for quick pattern recognition and prediction of whats next, and I think I already intuitively know a lot it, because I'm picking up the patterns in the exercises really quick, but I am not "learning" it to where I'll be able to talk about it with fellow musicians or recognize it if asked. I am playing for fun and don't expect to ever be asked to play piano with a group (I will always be a flute player). So - am I missing out by not understanding the theory?
Also - Bass Clef makes my brain hurt.
