I’m looking for solos in pretty much any style, but I’d like to focus on pop, rock, funk, and similar. I don’t mind jazz, but it’s not one of my favorite genres so I wanted to start with something in a genre I really like to increase motivation to practice.
I’m a classically trained trumpet player so anything that’s not piano or multi voice instruments would be fine. I’m not too worried about range either unless the solo consistently goes out of the range and trying to play it would mess it up because of having to switch octaves or something
Here’s some stuff that I’ve looked at before for some examples:
The guitar solo in “Kid Charlemagne” by Steely Dan
Mike Becker’s solo in “Beirut” with Steps Ahead
Some stuff by the big soloists like Louis Armstrong, miles davis, and a bit of Lee Morgan.
I’d also appreciate some tips as well on how to find good solos and how to distinguish the great ones from the good ones.
I have the basics on the style and some notion of how the solos are structured, but I really just need to practice a lot, except I have no idea where to start in terms of finding good solos to practice. Most of what I do these days is take songs and arpeggiate through the chords, look for common tones, practicing counterpoint (ie doing only 1-4 notes per chord or bar depending), and practicing the offbeat accent or other stylistic articulations.
The basics that I know for structuring a solo is pretty much: use vibrato as an embellishment, use sequences, give space, switch up what beat to come in on, focus on structure (aba, abc, etc), and keep it simple while focusing on a motif to hold it all together.
So, I’d love to hear what you’re favorite solos are (jazz or not) and if you want, a bit of advice would be greatly appreciated!
