I have one of those cheap, tiny 32 key midi keyboards, but as i learn more and more about music theory, i want to play larger chords, and larger chord progressions that my little boy just ain't big enough to do so.
I make electronic music, so not being able to play out a large chord in the keyboard isn't the end of the world for me, since i can just write the notes in inside the DAW, but i really want to move into more complex topics in music theory (extended chords mostly tbh), which i'm not really comfortable performing in a 32 key space.
So my question is: should i save up and spend on something like a 49 key controller, or just stick to playing smol chord progs in my keyboard and using my DAW to play out larger chords?
Something else i forgot to mention is that i don't have all that much space in my room. My midi keyboard sits nicely in front of my screen but anything larger than that i would have to make space for at one of the sides or something.
Also, (totally unrelated question), how do i start writing music by actually writing it down? i don't know how to read sheet music and to be honest i don't really want to start doing so, since i mostly treat music as a hobby.
Can i just write down chords at random within a certain key? do you or does someone you know do this? I want to start experimenting with that idea but i feel like i don't know enough theory to pull it off and i'll end up writing down stuff that makes no sense, because i know the names of the chords but i haven't really internalized what they sound like, if that makes sense.
Any tips for this?
