My child started group solfege classes when he turned four. He's now five and a half and although he can clearly sing 'Do' up to 'So' on a keyboard and press the keys whilst saying it, he can't sight read at all.
I looked at an old John Thompson book and he couldn't even do the first lesson because looking at a note and just playing it, even slowly, is something he hasn't been taught at all. It's always just solfege, and although the notes are in front of him he doesn't read them because there's no need since the teacher sings it.
The class has been great for enjoyment but solfege doesn't seem to be going anyway compared to traditional music classes.
What are your thoughts on solfege vs traditional methods?
