I'm a guitar player of over 20 years, and have always used tab, I'm now trying to learn to read music, and for now I'm focusing on the mandolin as my main instrument. My technique is OK for now, the issue is learning to read notation.
I've got a few different books but the main hurdle I'm experiencing is that I'm trying to look at the music to identify the note, but also not knowing 100% where the notes are on my fretboard.
I feel like I should change my approach to first get more of a handle on where the notes are on the fretboard, so that when I'm trying to read the music, I'm not also having to figure out where that is on the fretboard. Does this make sense, or am I over thinking the process?
If I'm on the right track with my thinking, what are some recommended exercises in order to do this? If I'm going down the wrong path, how should I be approaching this?
Many thanks in advance!
