I've been playing and performing music all my life and am very familiar with melodies and chords and song structure and a whole lot of other basic music theory. However, none of my music teachers growing up ever taught me about chord progressions and how to use chords properly in composition. When I started composing on Little Sound DJ, I didn't really know what I was doing, so I started out with covers and expanded into making original stuff. Turns out doing this without knowledge of chord progressions led to some wonky and poorly structured tracks.
Now, that I've exposed myself to chord progressions, I have lots of questions and no music teacher to ask. I'm hoping someone here can help me. Here are some questions I've got to begin with:
-
I've seen various kinds of chord progression charts, but I'm not sure how to use all the potential chord progressions. What should a verse sound like? How should I make it different from a chorus? What about a bridge?
-
How do I know which chords and progressions evoke which emotions? Is there a diagram or outline or other tool for determining this?
-
Should a melody come first or should a chord progression sequence come first? I've seen composition done both ways.
I know some of this will come with practice, but I need a foundation for understanding how this all works. Thank you in advance.
