Like the title says, I have been interested in music composition for a while now, with particular interest towards writing music with electronic instruments (synthesizers, samplers, etc.). As a first step, I bought the phone edition of FL Studio to serve as a sketchpad for musical ideas, but found that I couldn't really advance beyond writing simple ideas/phrases. Even since deciding to invest in a copy of Ableton Live Suite (it seemed to have an interesting way of presenting itself as a DAW + the Max4Live integration seemed intriguing as I have experience in programming), I have not had much luck in getting anything down beyond a simple phrase or an idea that could be expanded upon later (I suspect that this is due to a combination of lack of knowledge, inspiration, and time).
To clarify, I have taken an online course that goes over the basics of music theory and do have basic knowledge of the pieces that comprise songs (notes, chords, rhythm, etc.), but not much beyond the very basics, and do not know how to play any instruments. Also, like I said before, my college work does not afford me much free time and am unable to get much down in the ways of musical ideas when I do decide to open up Live and take a crack at writing something.
With all that said, my question is as follows: does anybody here have any recommendations for how I should approach trying to advance myself musically? Anybody here ever been in a similar situation or just know what I should be doing? Is trying to write music a lost cause at the moment? The people on this subreddit seem like good people who know what they're talking about and I would be happy to get some feedback from anybody here who has something to offer. Thanks in advance!
