First of all, this will potentially be hard to explain but I'm going to attempt it.
Secondly, I'm about a year into producing seriously and I know I should be making my own as much as possible (which i do) but I use presets to work backwards on and see what makes the preset sound good.
I have a bunch for Massive and a bunch for Serum, but I'm trying to focus on Serum because I feel like it's more capable in the long run. Anyway I have a lot of awesome presets that I like a lot, but they're almost all plucks/pads/leads. Most of the bass presets I have found sound pretty terrible as is.
For example I'm trying to emulate Getter's signature sounds, where they're really sharp and quick with a lot of reverb. I have a whole "Getter" preset pack, but almost every single one of them sound absolutely nothing like Getter. A lot of high pitched screeches with no substance, extremely unlistenable. Alot of them don't even have a pitch, just screeching. Most of them don't sound like anything I've heard in even the most mediocre of Dubstep tracks.
I assume it's my fault, because obviously there wouldn't be countless packs and presets if they sounded this shitty. So my question is, does anyone have any tips about how to bring life into these presets? I'm guessing that the bass presets that actually do sound good need to be processed to wobble as opposed to just a static synth, I just don't know how.
