I'm trying to get out of the habit of only making 4 chord progressions that just go on and on through out the whole song without any variation to them. I like how, for example, Dj Snake makes his chord progressions in some of his songs. Like if the progressions goes 1-2-3-4 then the second loop would be something like 1-2-5-6. But the 5 and 6 would sound almost the same than 3 and 4 but they'd still be different chords. I don't really know how to do this properly. Is it just trial and error or are there some guidelines what to follow when making chord progressions like this? And if you make a different chord progression for chorus what do you usually do? Any tips?
And an additional note is that Dj Snake always uses chord voicings that are very close to each other. Like if he would use C major and E minor chords he'd voice them to be:
C-E-G
B-E-G
So very little movement between the chords, just like a bass line going from one semitone down from C to B and everything on the top staying the same. But yeah, anyway, just using him as an example since I guess he has some kind of knowledge how to add variation to chord progressions and not just randomly trying shit without understanding anything.
How yall guys do it?
Thanks!
