Hearing skills
Learning to sing on pitch
I was planning on starting vocal lessons after two years of taking guitar and piano, so I met up with my music school’s vocal instructor. We did a quick vocal test where she played successive notes on the piano and had me follow them vocally.
Afterwards I was told it would be better for me to improve my music hearing when it comes to finding the note vocally, as I was out of tune majority of the time, before starting lessons. She did let me know that it’s something we can work on together if I wanted to start right away, but it will mean we’ll focus on it and breathing for the first batch of lessons, delaying things like techniques and whatnot. I would rather work on it on my own as much I can before starting lessons to avoid wasting time and tuition if it’s something I can do solo.
So I decided “Okay, time to work on hitting notes vocally” and I more or less figured out a rudimentary vocal range that I can use until the instructor comes into the picture. But then I realized, isn’t what I’m doing comparable to learning to draw my name instead of write it? Like if the instructor played the notes I practiced I would nail them, but any other notes? Probably not. So I need to work on the skill itself.
My question is what’s the best way here? I’m not asking how to hit specific notes vocally but how to develop the skill to find a note vocally by hearing it.
