I’ve been trying to configure a list of techniques and concepts composers throughout history would agree are essential to master. Naturally, that’s been quite an undertaking. Most articles don’t list individual techniques, which is annoying, but rather broader industry skills like audio management, which I don’t care about at the moment. I’ve gathered some music theory textbooks I could scavenge, and bought the Pianist’s Guide to Historic Improvisation on kindle in order to educate myself on practical principles of composition.
I am currently not able to seek a music teacher, so am forced to instruct myself. My plan is to write one etude per concept or technique, and then move from there to piano miniatures, working up and up until I’m at the big forms - symphonies, concerti, etc.
What are some historically informed resources I might use, and do you have your own personal list of concepts you believe are vital?
Thanks
