In another forum I had a question about something curious (to me) I noticed when I loaded some tracks up in a DAW. After loading them, I set about trying to chop the track up into pieces based on what I thought sounded like a significant change. Turned out this ended up being every 4 or 8 measures. A helpful responder u/mikethedrywaller pointed out that was because chord progressions are typically 4/8/12 bars — for example as is the case in the 12 bar blues.
The thread got shutdown before I could ask follow up questions, so I'm here now. What is the technical term for these chunks? I understand they are chord progressions, but they are also more than that, but maybe less than a bridge/verse/chorus. Mike suggested "rhythmic pattern". Ideas?
Second question — I also thought I noticed that the vocals almost always started early. Maybe a half-beat, beat, or two. Is that common?
