My knowledge of music theory is limited and I only have bits and pieces from primary school some 30 years ago so please bare with me as I try to explain this.
I'm using beginners jazz guitar fakebook courses. I have decided to focus on the rhythm courses and then will tackle chord melody and soloing courses later. I've been practicing All Blues and Autumn Leaves to start. I love the way the instructor performs them and I'm so pleased to be able to play them in time and nearly from memory of the notation/tab.
My confusion is when I go listen to one of those standards by someone else on Youtube or from a contemporary recording they sound nothing alike to me. To me they appear to be totally different notes, rhythm, chords, etc. What should I be looking for or listening to that is the commonality that makes Autumn Leaves unique?
