Hello,
I'm interested in opinions and advice on how to find a teacher who will help me reach my goal of being able to write and perform my own songs on piano, and eventually guitar.
I don't have a very skilled ear for translating sounds I hear or think of into actual notes on the piano. The teacher I have been working with for ear training got frustrated with my requests for easier assignments and I got frustrated with the assignments because they were too difficult for me. He would give me pop / rock songs and have me figure out the notes or chords.
I'm able to match given cord progressions to songs pretty easily, but getting the notes themselves seems above my head, at least for upbeat rock or pop music.
I feel like I don't have the right words to tell the next teacher that will help them give me assignments that are at my skill level, or maybe I just need a more experienced teacher who knows how to make the information more digestible. This guy is a skilled musician but he's in his mid-late 20s i think, a little younger than me. Lessons were $45 for an hour and it seems like more experienced teachers would cost more. Located in Philadelphia, PA if that makes a difference.
Any advice? Do I just need to do standard piano lessons and the rest will come? Do I need to increase my budget for this?
Thanks!
