A brief backstory: I played acoustic guitar in high school, I was good at playing but my musical ear was awful. I tried learning singing, took lessons too, but I sucked. Now I’m picking up guitar again and I’d like to improve my ears and musical understanding.
Things I’m good at: the physical act of playing: that was always easy, I learned relatively fast.
Things I’m bad at: recognizing note patterns, melodies, chord patterns, sometimes even distinguishing between minor and major chords can be difficult. I don’t know how to improvise: meaning I don’t know which notes would sound good and don’t know the scales (on the guitar). I can’t recognize intervals between two notes. My understanding of musical theory is very limited beyond the basic intervals. I sing in tune sometimes and sometimes not, the problem is I don’t always hear right away which one is it.
My goal: I want to learn to sing especially without guitar playing chords at the same time. I want to learn how to improvise on guitar. I overall want to better my musical ear to pick up songs on the ear (which is unbearably slow right now) whether I’m singing or playing guitar.
I would greatly appreciate some tips. If you have a personal story regarding the subject, that would be nice too. Many thanks!
