I am mostly a pianist, but I have messed around a bit with a ukelele, so I know a bit about how fretboards work. Each string is it's own note and then each fret raises the note by a half-step. But then what this means is that any given note can be played on several different strings. So my question is, when you're reading music, how do you know which string to use to play that note? Is there a standard rule, or is there some creative interpretation going on? If it's up to the player, what goes into making that decision?
I realize this may be kind of a basic question, but I couldn't figure out how to Google it, so I thought reddit might be able to help me.
