Usually when I begin to mix down a track I get all of my elements to the loudness that I want them, and then I pull down all the volume sliders until my track is peaking at -6dB. Then I begin compressing/mastering before gaining up to 0dB.
My question is could I just get all of my elements how I want them, then slap a limiter on the master, use gain reduction to get the song peaking at -6dB, then do my compression/mastering and bring it up? Does this change anything??
Tl;dr: Is there a difference between lowering all the volume sliders and using gain reduction? Thanks.
