I’ve been playing instruments for seven years. I’ve been playing flute for four years, piccolo for less than one year, and tenor sax for almost a month. Every now and then, I’ll play piano, recorder, and ocarina. I even compose and arrange. Despite being musical, I can’t play in time no matter what I do. I’ve tried using a metronome, but it just stresses me out. I find it distracting. I also seem to zone out and ignore it. It requires so much of my brain power that other aspects of my playing suffer. I’ve tried playing at a very slow tempo and gradually increasing. I’ve tried to play over small sections of a piece. I tried using recordings at 25% of the original tempo. Nothing has helped. I just get too stressed, and I feel like I’m not as good as a musician as I thought I was. I feel like I don’t even know how to play with a metronome. What can I do?
