Hello. I'm a super noob to playing violin and harmonica; I've had both for a few years and go through spurts of finding basic songs (mostly sheet music for simple songs from movies and video games I enjoy) to practice. But I feel like it's really challenging to always want to keep actually playing as opposed to thinking it would be neat to be a proficient musician. It feels very challenging to find enough new songs I care about to keep it interesting when just having an instrument out and playing just ANYTHING isn't what I want.
Essentially, I'd like to be able to get together with a couple of friends and sort of have what one might think of as the fantasy story/game musical tavern night or village dance. It would be neat to be able to play existing songs I know, but also to ... I guess improvise in an appealing way?
Is getting to that point where you're just playing around with your violin doing whatever really a matter of just playing enough songs over and over to have an easy repertoire? Or are there skills drills I should do to be able to quickly pick up tunes and play them?
I don't understand how to access the musical experience I want to have. Resources online tend to be about just generally getting more skillful in a craft, which I understand also probably prepares people to do this but... I'm looking for something else other than Art and wondering if there's another road that makes more sense for the hobbyist amateur.
I hope someone is able to understand in my ramblings the experience I want and the guidance I'm seeking, but don't have the musician's vocab to express.
