trying to get into composing. i'm a total beginner, and learning to use a midi keyboard seems like a good start for being able to analyze and record melodies.
the full range of octaves can only be played by an 88 key keyboard, but those tend to be expensive... (i'd like to only spend about $100, maaaybe up to $150) and they don't seem very common, either. most of the synthesizers i see on r/synthesizers only have 61-66. i also worry that buying a keyboard with more keys than i need means sacrificing quality in other aspects, if it's the same price as a keyboard with less keys.
i don't know enough about music to know how often i'd even need more than 5 octaves for a song. i'm not looking for the "bare minimum" number of keys, i'm looking for a number of keys that's "pretty good". not the ideal, but not too shabby either. even if 88 really is the number i'm looking for.
