Hey folks!
I've been away from electric guitar for about a decade and recently been thinking I want to get back into music to have a non-tech based hobby. My musical tastes are all over the place from metal, to jazz and hip-hop, though I tend to have decently complex musical tastes, outpacing my own skill as far choosing music to learn. I'd never really learned a full song while I was playing but had been into things like Dream Theater, Rush and other Prog Metal/Rock alongside genres like math rock.
Guitar has the benefit of being familiar (with all the bad habits I'm sure I've taught myself over the years) and a good chunk of the music I listen to features it. I already own two guitars and amps/equipment. Theory tends to be a bit of an afterthought with tablature in my experience.
Piano, on the other hand (outside of my grandfather having one while I was growing up) is pretty much new for me. It pretty much is the standard for learning western music theory. I'd need to get an instrument (I do have access to one though I'd need to ask a roommate if I could use it for a bit, and it's technically not his either... I'm happy to save and buy my own.)
So to sum up:
Given that I'd like to learn music theory and write my own music as a creative outlet (I think there's other psychological layers to this piece, that I am working on, as far as why I didn't really write anything in the past), would it be better to try to start fresh with piano? I don't really feel drawn to a particular instrument per se, I just like music all around. This might also help in that it's a bit disconnected from my past and doesn't have any baggage that might be hanging around there.
With guitar, I'm curious if anyone has thoughts around how best to approach learning when your usual tastes are not at your skill level? (The answer here may be "Suck it up and just pick something".
Are there caveats that I might be missing with one approach over another? Any other thoughts related to it are definitely welcome as well.
This may also be multifaceted as well where I might just do a little of both, but I'm curious to find pros and cons of both.
I've also recently been diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, so it's certainly possible my issues with practicing in the past were compounded by that (practicing music was always tough for me back in school from grade school trumpet to guitar in college).
Thanks for reading and I look forward to any advice you all might have.
