I love Fundamentals of Piano by C. Chuang and looking for similar resources that emphasize musicality over endless drills. It tries to teach you how to deal with challenges and structuring your practice.
Here's an excerpt:
objective: what techniques to acquire, i.e., if you can’t play fast enough, you can’t trill, you want to memorize, etc.,
then do: i.e., practice hands separately, use chord attack, memorize as you practice, etc.,
because: the physiological, psychological, mechanical, etc., explanations for why these methods work – HS practice makes difficult passages easier and
if not: problems that arise if uninformed methods are used. Without this “if not”, students can pick any other method – why this one? We need to know what not to do because bad habits and wrong methods, not insufficient practice, are the main causes of a lack of progress.
I love being able to troubleshoot my piano practice and thinking about music theory and keys. I'm honestly learning piano so I can compose and express more than for its own sake.
Any docs/books like that for other instruments?
Background: Violin throughout high school. sight reading in treble clef, good ear for classical
