An instrument alone cannot call up any emotion. It takes the musician to allow what they are feeling to reflect in their playing. Basically expressing whatever you feel through your instrument. Imagine how you express emotion in conversation.
In this video I express feelings of frustration in almost like an angry conversation. Notice what happens to the pitch and volume as I say the words, “I can’t even with you” (first time, then second time). The pitch naturally gets higher and the volume naturally gets louder, and that is exactly how I develop the melody. I start singing at a higher pitch and a bit loud.
The instrument I chose to use to express this type of angry energy is the electric guitar, because it can produce loud sound through good amps. Remember that it is how you play your instrument that creates an emotional response in the listener. So, I’m playing faster rhythms (basic eighth rhythms) aggressively to express frustration. I also try a different type of rhythm for more options. It is good to practice different ways of playing the same feeling/emotion.
