Hi everyone
I'm 25 and I want to learn to play a new instrument. However, I'm not yet sure which one and I would be very happy if some of you could help me in the decision making progress.
Some information:
I took about 2 years lessons in classical guitar and electronic keyboard when I was a child. Other than that, I don't have a lot of musical knowledge.
I would mainly like to play classical music. I also want to learn an instrument to play in an amateur orchestra or ensemble (or choir) once I'm good enough. It doesn't have to sound perfect, I just want to have fun making (classical) music with other people. In any case, I want to take lessons to learn the instrument. Side question: What do you think about taking lessons from a student of music instead of a fully qualified teacher to make it more affordable?
The 3 options I consider are the following:
- Piano: I have some prior knowledge in it since I used to play the electronic keyboard and a few years ago I did some self-learning on the piano. I already have a piano, so the cost of buying one is not a deciding factor. I love the sound of a piano. An advantage is that I live with a very good pianist, so I could always ask about advice. What speaks against the piano is that I think it is more of a solo-instrument (as I said, I'd like to play in some ensemble). A second, rather strange, reason I have against the piano is that I have an office job and thus sit all day long and now I would start a hobby where I sit even more.
- Violin: This would probably be the hardest one to learn of my list. But I like that it would be something completely new and challenging and I could join an orchestra or ensemble after learning it for some time.
- Singing Lessons: I was never good at singing, but I just recently discovered that I CAN sing in tune (sometimes...). Compared to classical orchestra music or piano, I like classical singing less. But I thought about singing lessons because it would allow me to join a choir.
For me, also cost plays a role. However, I think that all 3 options are about equally expensive.
Thanks to anyone who can give me some advice :)
