I'm learning the flute, and my biggest issue (probably not really, but is what's annoying me most) is my breathing. I can't make it through full phrases without sneaking breaths in the middle. The particular piece I've been trying to learn has suggested breaths every 4 measures, but I can only make it 2-3, if I try to continue the full 4 I run out of breath, particularly on notes just above the staff. This hasn't really been improving on its own, so I'm trying to find ways I can work on it. I've been playing off and on for about 8 months, but have buckled down to daily practice the past two months.
Would physical exercise, like running or cycling, improve this?
Or is there anything else that would specifically target this and help?
Or does this take several more months of daily practice, I just need to be patient, and should stop worrying about constantly sneaking in breaths?
